Suggested lead: In Olympia, state representatives are
working on a bill that would legalize small homegrows of marijuana.
Dan Frizzell has that story.
Wrap (:64 total): A lawmaker from coastal Washington
is leading efforts in Olympia to allow adults to cultivate their own supplies of
recreational marijuana.
Representative Brian Blake, the Aberdeen Democrat who chairs the House
Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee, introduced his legislation
Wednesday, and expects a hearing next week.
BLAKE:
“Washington allows you to make your own wine, beer, etcetera, and I think
allowing a small homegrow is consistent with the thinking of the people in
Washington, and we’re going to try and get a floor vote on that bill to allow a
very, very limited homegrow.” [:16]
Blake’s new pot bill, cosponsored by a Republican from
eastern Washington, would legalize homegrows of a maximum of six plants at one
time in a private residence, and would OK possession of up to 24 ounces of
smokeable cannabis – again, per residence, not per person. Landlords could
prohibit pot plants in their rental units, and the ban on marijuana possession
or use by minors would remain unchanged. A hearing on the homegrow bill could
come as early as Monday in the House Commerce and Gaming Committee.
In Olympia, I’m Dan Frizzell.
