Suggested lead: A new bill in Olympia could have Washington adopt the
goals of the Paris climate-change agreement that President Trump recently pulled
the U.S. out of. Dan Frizzell has
that story.

SLATTER:
"This is for our kids, and for their future.” [:03].
That's
Washington state Representative Vandana Slatter.
The Bellevue Democrat just introduced legislation that would align
the state’s greenhouse gas emission limits with those established under the 2015
Paris climate agreement. That’s the accord signed by 195 of the 197 potential
signatories, with only Syria and Nicaragua refusing to join. The number dropped
to 194 earlier this month when Trump canceled America’s participation.
SLATTER:
"There’s a reason why 195 countries signed onto this.
We all share the same wish for our children and cherish that. We are a
leader in environmental policy.
We’re also a global community. This
bill allows Washington state to remain a part of that community.”
[:18].
It’s unusual for bills to be
introduced in late June, long after lawmakers normally would have adjourned for
the year. Slatter was able to put
her legislation into the pipeline because Wednesday was day one of a new special
session, as lawmakers attempt to hammer out a state budget. Her climate bill has
been referred to the House Environment Committee. In Olympia, I’m Dan
Frizzell.
